Medication

This option involves using medication that induces sleepiness in the infant. I do not endorse this particular option, but physicians occasionally prescribe it, and parents sometimes turn to it. This is, at best, an option of last resort, and should be used, if at all, for only very limited periods of time.

There are at least three problems with using medication for solving sleep problems with chil dren and, particularly, with infants. First, there are virtually no medications that induce sleepiness without other risky side effects. Also, it is easy to give a child too much of these medications.

Second, the use of medication to solve bedtime problems typically involves some kind of "rebound." A rebound refers to an increase in symptoms that surpass those of the pretreatment level after treatment has ended. For example, various nasal sprays reduce nasal congestion and provide immediate relief, but are accompanied by congestion that is worse than the congestion that led to the use of the spray in the first place. Similarly, using medication to solve bedtime problems can increase sleeplessness and distress beyond pre-medication levels if the medication is used for more than a few days.
